David Shepherd OBE FRSA

On leaving school David Shepherd’s foremost ambition was to become a game warden in Africa, but his passion for wildlife and wild places was only to re-emerge later. He trained as an artist under Robin Goodwin. The RAF flew him down to Kenya in 1960 where he was asked to paint his very first wildlife painting – of a rhino. It was on that same visit that he became a conservationist overnight when he found 255 zebra lying dead around a poisoned waterhole.

Since that day David has campaigned tirelessly for the plight of endangered animals.

David has won many awards as an artist and conservationist, has been the subject of radio and TV programmes, has published five books and over 150 limited edition prints ranging from aviation, steam engines, landscapes, portraits, Victorian scenes and of course, wildlife. A BBC poll recently nominated him as one of the wildlife heroes of the last 40 years.

David is married with four daughters. He lives in West Sussex, England.
