The
African Easel is a fine art
gallery that prides itself on a fine selection of investment
art pieces for the discerning art collector, with particular
emphasis on the subjects of African wildlife, people
and landscapes.
SETTING
The confluence of the Chobe and the Zambezi rivers is
also the junction where four countries meet: Botswana,
Zimbabwe, Namibia and Zambia. Seventy kilometres further
away are the mighty Victoria Falls - one of the natural
wonders of the world - where the Zambezi River thunders
over fantastic cataracts and pushes its way through
the winding Batoka Gorge that leads into Lake Kariba.
Part of the heritage of this very special part of the
world is the prolific wildlife that has inspired poets
and artists over the years. The game roams freely in
and out of the national parks of Chobe, Hwange, Zambezi
and Mosi oa Tunya and slightly further afield are the
Okavango Delta, Moremi, Caprivi, Makgadikgadi, Central
Kalahari and Kafue parks and game reserves. Amidst this
backdrop of wildlife and African splendour lie the towns
of Victoria Falls, Livingstone and the small safari
town of Kasane, gateway to the famed Chobe National
Park.
The
African Easel, situated in
Kasane, is a fully active art gallery that permanently
displays artworks by various selected artists and arranges
special exhibitions throughout the tourist season. We
provide a cultural alternative to the more intrepid
game-viewing or tiger-sfishing safaris for which the
Chobe River is world famous. We encourage artists from
Botswana to exhibit their work with us and provide a
forum for them to reach the general public. We are open
to the public six days a week.
ART
AND ARTISTS
We exhibit original paintings
in oils, watercolours, acrylics and pencil as well as
limited edition fine art prints. A selection of limited
edition bronze sculptures brings a third dimension to
the display.
Most
of our artists live and work
in Africa, often in remote regions, and all display
a depth of understanding and knowledge that speaks of
their passion for their subject matter. We are also
proud of our association with the Everard Read Gallery
in Johannesburg, South Africa, through which we have
access to a wider range of international art.
We
stock selected items of African artefacts
that are brought to us by traders that scour the length
and breadth of the continent for unique pieces. Icons
from Ethiopia stand next to bronze currency bracelets
from Nigeria, mud cloths from Mali, Yoruba bead work,
finely carved Pygmy beds from Zaire or tables and chairs
from Cameroon and ceremonial masks and crowns worn by
Africa’s royalty and leaders. We have silver jewellery
from Senegal as well as Tuareg silver necklaces and
amber beads, and baskets from Botswana, Zambia and KwaZulu-Natal.
We
also have a range of wildlife and Africana books,
biographies, guide and reference books.
Packing
and shipping of purchases of any shape or size to any
destination worldwide can be arranged. |
