Kuru Development Trust

Deep in the Kalahari sandveld a group of fourteen San Bushmen artists relive their ancient past - when the veld was endless and game and food abundant.

They revive it in strong forms and vibrant colours and express a yearning for better days that are forever gone.

  Dada Dqua X'oa
Originating in 1990 as one of several income-generating projects of the Kuru Development Trust, a self-help project for the San of the Kalahari, the artists from the Kuru Development Trust have produced contemporary art which is quite remarkable in character. Although contemporary because of modern techniques used, unbelievably bright colours and freedom of expression, the art has a strong link with the rock art once produced by the ancestors of these artists. It breathes the culture and history of a people alien to the world in which they live today. Through their art the artists are helping their people bridge the gap between the past and the present.

The Kuru artists have exhibited their colourful oil paintings, linoleum prints, lithographs and intaglio prints extensively and participated in many exhibitions worldwide. They have also received several awards over the years and as such have gained their rightful place in the contemporary art world.

Although almost all of the artists are illiterate, Dada Qgam, Cg’ose Ntcoxo, Nxabe Taase, X’aga, Coex’ae Bob, Thamae Setshogo, Thama Kase, Xgaoc’o X’are, Xgaiga Qhomata, Qgam, Gamnqoa Kukama, X’are Thama, Tshabu Taase and Q’oex’oa are proud to be artists, knowing that they possess knowledge and abilities unique to themselves.
